Do it yourself

General

In this section I write explanations and necessary steps for work to be done by myself, repairs or settings.

Why

I notice in the time that descriptions and instructions were to difficult or to subject-specific. We also noticed that “specialist workshops” can rarely be relied upon. Either they don‘t do what they are supposed to do, or they don‘t do it right. Frequent disappointments or wrong information or no information drove us to try something new and do it ourselves. So far, actually, always with eventual success.

For this reason, I try to describe the procedure for automotive layman, as I am one, understandable und simple. So if I wrote rubbish or nonsense, please give me a hint. This is the only way the to make this site helpful.

How

For this reason, I try to describe the procedure for automotive laymen, as I am one, understandable and simple. If there is any gibberish somewhere, please give me a hint. This is the only way this can be helpful.

In order to be able to assess the work, I have introduced a rating system at the beginning of the descriptions.

Literature

I bought the following listed books in the past. The content is very different.

  • Very helpful, in my opinion, is the „Camaro Restoration Guide 1967-1969“ by Motorbooks, from 1997. It lists in chronological order the steps to restoration and provides matching drawings from the Factory Assembly Manuals; ISBN: 978-0-7603-0160-9
  • My 2nd favorite is „How to Restore Your Camaro 1967-1969“ by Cartechbook from 2010. The book describe the work steps well and in detail with pictures; ISBN: 978-1-61325-224-6
  • The 3rd is the „Camaro Restoration Handbook“ for the 1967 to 1981 models by HPBooks in 1990. I see it as a supplement to the others. In general, it is the least helpful; ISBN: 978-0-89586-375-1
  • Likewise by Motorbooks is the „Original Chevrolet Camaro 1967-1969 – The Restoration Guide“ from 2001, in a new edition from 2019. This book is my absolutle favorite. I love it! However, it is not a restoration guide, but more a guide to show the differences and changes between the 1st generation model years; ISBN: 978-0-7603-6590-8
  • My favorite author for standard catalogs of American cars John Gunnell wrote with the co-author Jerry Heasley „The Story of Camaro“; ISBN: 978-0-89689-432-7. It is for all generations.

  • However, the most important thing is the Factory Assembly Manual. It contains the important data and exploded views.
  • The Vehicle Information Kits from General Motors Heritage Center should also not to be underestimated. They provide technical data and settings for the engine and chassis.
